Joining a gym can be tough
You feel embarrassed or unsure of how to begin.
It’s hard to be the new person, and it’s even worse when you have no idea how all the gym equipment is supposed to work.
You’re not sure you’ll follow through.
Creating new habits and maintaining something like a workout schedule can feel daunting when you’re trying to fit it into a busy life.
You don’t want to fail.
If you’ve struggled your whole life with weight or getting in enough physical activity, it often feels easier to quit before you even begin.

From Basement to Business: The Story of Levels
Bruce Tanner didn’t originally set out to own a gym.
It all began with a couple of people he agreed to train, late at night, in his basement gym. Soon, that number grew and the group started doing multiple sessions. Things were going well, people were experiencing change, and Bruce was inspired by the kind of life changes he was witnessing.
And then Shelby experienced catastrophic flooding in 2007, and the basement gym was ruined.
While that easily could have been the end of the story, Bruce couldn’t stop thinking about what the group had managed to achieve in such a short time, only with the support of each other and a few rules: always show up, always give it your best, and never force someone to join.
Water makes a way
So when Bruce spotted an available space in Plymouth, he put in an offer, which was rejected. But, once again, some flooding changed the plot. Pipes burst in the building, flooding the space, and suddenly Bruce’s offer was enough. He and a friend renovated the space in secret, and the community wondered what would be revealed.
Levels comes to life
Levels wasn’t an overnight success, but over 1,000 people stopped by for the first open house in 2010. The first member, Charlie Doan, signed up for a year on opening day, and memberships continued to grow.
What you’ll see if you stop in today—community, support, encouragement, and energy—has always been at the heart of Levels. Bruce says that the gym is the pride of his life, the members have become his friends and family, adding meaning to his life that he can’t quite put into words.
If you’re looking for a place to be transformed, Levels is waiting for you.
